I wasn’t prepared for the freezing temperatures in my new hometown

I was raised in the south, where the temperature was always moderate.

However, a tantalizing job offer had me pack my bags and move 1,000 miles north of my hometown.

This was my first time living in temperatures below 25 degrees fahrenheit, plus little did I know that the record low for this area is -25 degrees. This was a big change! Now, I do not exactly own any warm Winter clothing. I had my suitcase packed with jeans and sweaters, however this was weather that required long johns, several layers of cotton clothing, plus a massively insulated coat for the outdoors. Just buying a warm Winter coat set me back several hundred dollars. This was not the sort of weather conditions I was expecting. To make matters much worse, I can no longer afford the energy bills to keep running my furnace all day every day. I have a gas boiler which is a lot more efficient than the seasoned electric furnace that my previous home had, however when you live in below zero weather conditions, even a boiler is going to add up in gas expenses. I’m worried that I might never adjust to these low temperatures. I like the job and my new position that brought me here, however there’s not much else I like about my move across the country. The way in which global temperature patterns are moving each year, it only seems like the winters will be colder as time goes on. I’ve been running my oil furnace to maximum, which only helps me until I’m ready to climb out into subzero temperatures again.
