When my cousins first visited my family in our southern home, they couldn’t stop pointing out all of the things that were new or novel to them coming from their home state.

I think the palm trees were the first thing the three of them noticed on the car ride leaving the airport.

They said they were mesmerized by the view of the ocean and the coastline while their plane was making its slow descent towards the ground. Lucky for them, they had an afternoon flight with almost full visibility, with little to no cloud cover. When they saw our schools, they were amazed to see that all of our hallways were outside. The doors to classrooms opened up to covered sidewalks and concrete walkways. Often we’d be running through rain just to get from one side of the campus to the other, especially if we were in P.E. class and were out on the fields. The whole idea of having open campuses was novel to them, but then again these days almost all of those campuses are being torn down and rebuilt like traditional schools. That is after the years of horrifying school shootings in the time since the mid to late 1990s. But, the one thing they all complained about the most while visiting were the high temperatures. They were constantly annoyed by how hot it was outside and how intense the sun felt. It really made me think hard about how the climate felt, since until then it was never something in my conscious thought process. But, I have to say, I have grown sick of this climate in the two decades since that famed trip.
